Day 1: Drive from Dehradun to Gangotri

🚗Drive Distance: 237 km | 🕗Drive Duration: 8 hr. approx. | 🏔️Altitude: 10,200 ft

The lovely journey commences early in the morning from Dehradun, a vibrant city recognized as the entrance to the Uttarakhand Himalayas. Starting at 6 am from Prince Chowk, you will begin a picturesque drive through the essence of Uttarakhand. En route, you will traverse valleys flanked by towering mountains. The path is adorned with glistening water streams and enchanting waterfalls that enhance the allure of Uttarakhand.

After covering 35 km from Dehradun, your initial major stop will be Mussoorie, a renowned hill station often referred to as the "Queen of Hills," offering breathtaking views of the Shivalik Ranges and Doon Valley. Situated at an elevation of approximately 2,000 meters, the town is famed for its mist-shrouded hills, colonial architecture, and lively markets. Notable attractions include Kempty Falls and the Mussoorie Mall Road. A breakfast break will be taken along the way to relish the morning meal and soak in the beauty of the surroundings.

Continuing the journey, you will arrive at Uttarkashi, a spiritual town nestled on the banks of the Bhagirathi River. Recognized for its rich cultural legacy, ancient temples, and ashrams, Uttarkashi is a revered spot for both pilgrims and trekkers. The town is home to the renowned Kashi Vishwanath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, and acts as a gateway to numerous Himalayan treks.

Further along the path, you will pass through Harsil, a village situated along the Bhagirathi River. Noted for its dense deodar forests, apple orchards, and charming wooden houses, Harsil offers a peaceful retreat and is often described as one of Uttarakhand's hidden treasures. The serene atmosphere and breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks make it an ideal location to pause and appreciate the natural beauty surrounding you.

Continuing from Harsil, you will drive alongside the Bhagirathi River, where the soothing sound of flowing water enhances the peaceful ambiance, turning each moment on the road into a visual delight. Upon nearing Gangotri, the scenery becomes even more captivating, setting the perfect mood for the upcoming trek.

Gangotri is renowned as the origin of the Ganga River (with Gaumukh being the actual source), known as Bhagirathi at this point. Legend has it that King Bhagirath prayed to Lord Shiva for the salvation of his 60,000 sons' souls. Shiva granted his request and asked Goddess Ganga to release her waters, which purified the ashes of Bhagirath's sons. This mythological tale elevated the River Ganga's status as a purifier of souls.

By evening, you will reach Gangotri, a small town perched at an altitude of 3,100 meters, esteemed as one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites. Gangotri is famed for the Gangotri Temple, devoted to Goddess Ganga, where devotees gather to offer prayers. Upon arrival, you can settle into your lodging and savor the tranquil atmosphere of Gangotri. The Gangotri Dham is known as the spiritual source of the Ganges River. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and expansive forests, the town provides a serene setting. In the evening, you can enjoy a peaceful stroll along the Bhagirathi River or explore the local markets brimming with vibrant prayer flags and traditional handicrafts. Dinner will be served, and you will spend the night in Gangotri, preparing for the upcoming trek.

Planning your arrival: Day O

ree

Please book your flight/ train/ bus tickets well in advance to reach Dehradun.

You must book your tickets for Day 0 or earlier. Day 0 is the day before day 1 on your Itinerary.

There are 2 easy ways you can do so:

Direct Flight to Dehradun

Highly recommended since it gives you an additional rest day at Dehradun. If the flight ticket is too expensive, book your flight to Delhi and reach Dehradun by Bus/ Train.

You can also look for Autos outside the airport area. Autos are not permitted to enter the airport. They will charge you around 300 to Dehradun. If you couldn't find an auto, walk for another 1.5 km to Rishikesh Dehradun Highway. You can board a regular town Bus or shared Auto (called Vikrams, usually blue in color) for 30.

Please Note: if the cost difference in flight ticket prices between Delhi and Dehradun is around 1000 then book your flight directly to Dehradun. It gives you enough rest and saves time.
